Eugene Merle Shoemaker was an American geologist, astronomer, and planetary scientist who was best known for his contributions to the fields of astrogeology and planetary science. He is credited with discovering over 900 near-Earth objects and co-discovering comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which was the first known comet to impact Jupiter. Shoemaker died on July 18, 1997, at the age of 69, from injuries sustained in a car accident.
