Christa Wolf studied literature at Leipzig University. She was a student of Johannes R. Becher and Hans Mayer. She was influenced by the works of Franz Kafka, Bertolt Brecht, and Thomas Mann. Wolf's early work was influenced by her experiences during World War II. She wrote about the bombing of Dresden and the death of her brother in the war. Wolf's work became more political in the 1960s and 1970s.
