Coronado died in 1554. He was a Spanish explorer who led an expedition into the present-day southwestern United States in the 16th century. He was searching for the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola, which were said to be made of gold. Coronado's expedition was unsuccessful in finding the cities, but it did explore a large area of the American Southwest.
