Coronado's expedition ended in 1542. The expedition, led by Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, set out in 1540 to search for the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola, rumored to be filled with gold and other riches. After exploring the American Southwest and parts of present-day Mexico, the expedition failed to find the cities and returned to Mexico in 1542.
