Coronado's expedition began in Mexico. In 1540, Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado led an expedition from Mexico to explore the American Southwest in search of the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola. The expedition departed from the city of Compostela in present-day Nayarit, Mexico, and traveled northward through what is now the Sonoran Desert and into present-day Arizona and New Mexico.
