Ezra Nawi was convicted more than once. In 1986, he was convicted of libel for a poem he published, in which he accused an Israeli general of a war crime. In 2004, he was convicted of slander for a speech he gave in which he criticized the Israeli government's treatment of Palestinians. Nawi has always maintained his innocence, and has argued that his convictions were politically motivated.
