In the 1994 South African general election, the National Party, led by F.W. de Klerk, was defeated by the African National Congress (ANC), led by Nelson Mandela, ending 46 years of National Party rule. The ANC won a landslide victory, taking 62.6% of the vote and 252 out of 400 seats in the National Assembly, while the National Party won 20.4% of the vote and 82 seats.
