The answer is the United States. Caruana was born in Miami, Florida, and began playing chess at the age of five. He represented the United States at international tournaments throughout his junior career and won the US Junior Championship in 2007. In 2010, Caruana switched his chess federation to Italy, the country of his parents' origin, in order to increase his chances of qualifying for the World Chess Championship.
