The dynasty was founded by Muhammad Ali Pasha, an Albanian officer who served in the Ottoman army and eventually became the viceroy of Egypt. Farouk I was the last king of the Muhammad Ali dynasty. He was deposed in 1952 by a military coup led by Gamal Abdel Nasser.
