Ismail the Magnificent was the father of Fuad I. He was the third Khedive of Egypt and Sudan and a member of the Muhammad Ali dynasty. He ruled from 1863 to 1879. Ismail was a great reformer and modernizer of Egypt. He built many new schools, hospitals, and roads. He also expanded the Egyptian army and navy. However, his reforms were expensive and he went into debt.
