Juan Carlos I was the king of Spain from 1975 until his abdication in 2014. He was born in Rome, Italy, on January 5, 1938, to Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona, and María de las Mercedes of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. He was the grandson of Alfonso XIII, the last king of Spain before the Second Spanish Republic.
