Étienne Tshisekedi was the main opposition leader during the Mobutu Sese Seko era. He was a leading figure in the anti-Mobutu struggle, and was imprisoned and exiled on numerous occasions. He was elected president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2011, but was prevented from taking office by the incumbent president, Joseph Kabila. Tshisekedi died in 2017.
