Ferdinand II was born in 1578 in Graz, Austria. He was the son of Emperor Maximilian II and his wife Maria of Spain. Ferdinand was raised a Catholic and was educated by Jesuits. He became King of Bohemia in 1617 and Holy Roman Emperor in 1619. Ferdinand was a staunch Catholic and was determined to restore Catholicism to the lands of the Holy Roman Empire.
