Ferdinand was born in Graz, Styria, on 10 March 1578, the eldest son of Charles II, Archduke of Inner Austria, and Maria of Bavaria. Ferdinand's father died in 1590, and he inherited the Austrian lands. In 1619, he was elected Holy Roman Emperor.
