Péter Medgyessy, the previous Prime Minister of Hungary, was succeeded by Ferenc Gyurcsány. Medgyessy served as Prime Minister from 2002 until 2004, when he resigned due to declining popularity and internal conflicts within the Hungarian Socialist Party.
