Collor is the grandson of former Labour Minister Lindolfo Collor. He entered politics in 1982 as a city councilor in the city of Maceió, the capital of the state of Alagoas. He gained national prominence in 1989 when he was elected President of Brazil at the age of 29, becoming the youngest president in the country's history.
