Answer
Folke Bernadotte was assassinated by the paramilitary Zionist group Lehi on September 17, 1948. Lehi was opposed to Bernadotte's efforts to negotiate a peace settlement between Israel and the Arab states. Bernadotte had been appointed by the United Nations to mediate the conflict. Lehi's members believed that Bernadotte's proposals were too favorable to the Arab states and that he was attempting to undermine Israel's independence.
