What is the term for the trial of a dead person's remains?

  • Cadaver Synod

  • Mortuary Trial

  • Deadly Judgement

  • Post-mortem Tribunal

Answer

A Cadaver Synod (Latin: Synodus cadaveris) is a type of posthumous trial, in which the person's remains are exhumed and a trial held as if the deceased was present. In the Middle Ages, the practice was used to posthumously convict those who had been accused of heresy or other crimes after they had died. However, the practice was eventually condemned by the Catholic Church, and is now no longer permitted.
