Pope Formosus was born in 816. He was a pope of the Catholic Church from 891 to 896. He is remembered for his controversial reign, which was marked by conflict with the Roman aristocracy and the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was also the subject of a posthumous trial, in which he was declared a heretic and his body was stripped of its papal vestments and thrown into the Tiber River.
