Arthur Ashe was the first black American man to be ranked in the top 10 by the ATP. He achieved this in 1968, the year that the Open era of tennis began. Ashe went on to win three Grand Slam singles titles, the US Open in 1968 and 1970, and Wimbledon in 1975. He was also a member of the US Davis Cup team that won the title in 1968.
