Redi did not believe that venom was poisonous when ingested. He conducted an experiment in which he put meat in jars with gauze covering the opening of the jars. One jar had live snakes and one jar had no snakes. The meat in the jar with the snakes did not decompose, while the meat in the jar without snakes did.
