Francesco Redi died in 1697. He was an Italian naturalist who is considered to be one of the founders of the field of microbiology. He is best known for his work on the spontaneous generation of life, which he disproved by conducting experiments in which he showed that maggots only appeared on rotting meat if flies were allowed to lay eggs on it.
