In 1668, Francesco Redi, an Italian physician, disproved the ancient belief that vipers drank wine. Redi placed pieces of meat in two jars, one of which contained wine. He observed that maggots grew only on the piece of meat in the jar with meat, not the piece of meat in the jar with wine.
