French. Émilie Aubert, Zola's mother, was born in Aix-en-Provence, France, in 1789. She was the daughter of a prosperous merchant family and received a good education. In 1806, she married François Zola, an Italian engineer who had moved to France. They had six children together, including François Zola, the famous French writer.
