Francis George entered the Missionary Oblates in 1957. He was ordained a priest in 1964. He served as a missionary in India for several years before returning to the United States. He was appointed Bishop of Yakima in 1981. He served as Archbishop of Chicago from 1997 to 2014. He was elevated to cardinal in 2003.
