Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado led expeditions into present-day southwestern United States in the 16th century. He was born in Salamanca, Spain, in 1510. In 1535, he traveled to New Spain (now Mexico) and became governor of Nueva Galicia in 1538. In 1540, he set out on an expedition to find the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola, which were rumored to be rich in gold and silver.
