Coronado's expedition began in 1540. The expedition was led by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, a Spanish explorer, and was commissioned by the viceroy of New Spain, Antonio de Mendoza. The expedition set out from Compostela, Mexico, in February 1540, and traveled north through what is now the southwestern United States, in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola, a legendary land of wealth and gold.
