Marcos de Niza, a Franciscan friar, inspired Francisco Vásquez de Coronado's exploration of the American Southwest. In 1539, de Niza led an expedition to the Zuni pueblos in present-day New Mexico, where he claimed to have seen the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola, said to be made of gold and silver.
