Sea-captain was Mendonça Furtado's highest naval rank. He was a Portuguese navigator and explorer who lived in the 15th century. Furtado is best known for his role in the Portuguese exploration of the African coast. In 1462, he was part of a Portuguese expedition that explored the coast of Sierra Leone. He also participated in the Portuguese discovery of the Cape Verde Islands.
