Answer
François Duvalier consolidated his power in 1964 by declaring himself president for life. He had previously been elected president in 1957, and then amended the constitution to extend his term to five years. In 1964, he held a referendum to make himself president for life, which was approved by a large majority of voters. Duvalier then ruled Haiti as an absolute dictator until his death in 1971.
