Answer
Frans Hals died on the 26th August 1666. This was a time when the Dutch Republic was in decline, and the city of Haarlem was suffering from economic hardship. Hals' death was not widely mourned, and his work was largely forgotten for many years. However, in the 19th century, Hals' paintings were rediscovered and began to be appreciated for their realism and their sense of movement.
