Fred Allen did indeed coach provincial rugby, coaching the Auckland side in 1913. This was only a short time after he was appointed the first ever All Blacks coach, in 1908. During his time as coach of Auckland, Allen led the team to victory in the 1913 Ranfurly Shield challenge against Otago.
