Fred Hampton was the Deputy Chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, a revolutionary socialist organization founded in Oakland, California, in 1966. Hampton was a charismatic and eloquent leader who was committed to fighting for the rights of African Americans and other oppressed people. He was assassinated by Chicago police officers in 1969.
