The Big Bang theory was coined by British astronomer Fred Hoyle in 1949 on BBC Radio. The term was originally intended as a derisive nickname for the idea that the universe began with a hot, dense state. Hoyle believed that the universe was much older and more static than the Big Bang theory suggested.
