Fred Zinnemann was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary in 1897. He moved to the United States with his family in 1910. He worked as a newsreel cameraman and director before becoming a feature film director in the 1930s. He is best known for his films The Search (1948), High Noon (1952), From Here to Eternity (1953), and A Man for All Seasons (1966).
