British choreographer Frederick Ashton was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, but his family moved to England when he was young. He studied dance in London and became a principal dancer with the Vic-Wells Ballet (later the Royal Ballet) in 1935. Ashton created over 50 ballets, including "Cinderella," "La Fille mal gardée," and "Ondine." He was knighted in 1962 and received the Order of Merit in 1970.
