Burma, also known as Myanmar, was annexed by the British Empire in 1885. The annexation was the culmination of a series of conflicts between the British and the Burmese, which began in 1824. The British were motivated by a desire to secure their interests in India, as well as to gain access to Burma's valuable resources.
