The Fram expedition, led by Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen, aimed to reach the North Pole by drifting with the ice. Although the ship drifted further than any previous vessel, it fell short of the Pole. Instead, Nansen and a companion left the ship and set off on foot and skis, eventually reaching a latitude of 86°14′ North, the farthest north anyone had reached at that time.
