Paulus was promoted to Field Marshal by Adolf Hitler on the day of his surrender in Stalingrad, on January 31, 1943. Hitler had ordered Paulus to fight to the death, but Paulus surrendered to the Soviets after the Red Army surrounded the Sixth Army. Paulus was held prisoner for the rest of the war and died in Soviet captivity in 1957.
