After the Soviet counter-offensive, Paulus and his 2nd Army were cut off and surrounded. The Germans had initially hoped to hold out in Stalingrad until the summer of 1943, when they could be supplied by a new offensive through the Caucasus. However, the Soviet encirclement was complete by November 1942, and Paulus and his army were forced to surrender in January 1943.
