Dorothea Mendelssohn was a German writer, translator, and salonist. She was the wife of Friedrich Schlegel, a German philosopher, and a close friend of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Mendelssohn was born in Berlin to a wealthy Jewish family. She married Schlegel in 1797, and they had three children together.
