Frederick William II, the future King of Prussia, recruited Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, who was 16 or 17 at the time, into the Prussian Army in 1738. Steuben became a Prussian officer and served in the Seven Years' War. After the war, he was stationed in France, where he met Benjamin Franklin. Franklin recruited Steuben to help train the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
