Schuon was a Swiss-German philosopher, teacher, and Islamic scholar. He was born in Basel, Switzerland, to a German-Swiss father and a French-Swiss mother. He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Basel, where he was influenced by the work of Friedrich Nietzsche and Rudolf Otto. After graduating from university, Schuon traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, studying various religious traditions.
