Chaim Weizmann invited Haber to direct the Sieff Research Institute in Rehovot, Israel. Weizmann was a leading chemist and a Zionist activist. He had been a student of Haber's at the University of Göttingen. He was also a close friend of Haber's wife, Clara. Weizmann believed that Haber's expertise in chemistry could be used to help develop Israel's economy.
