Fritzie Zivic had five siblings. He was the fourth of six children born to a Croatian immigrant family in the South Bronx of New York City. His parents, Louis and Anna Zivic, had emigrated from Dalmatia in the late 19th century. Fritzie was the only one of their children to become a professional boxer. His older brother, Joe, was also a boxer, but he never turned professional.
