Fulbert Youlou led Congo into independence on 15 August 1960. Youlou was a Catholic priest and politician who had been involved in the Congolese independence movement since the 1940s. He was elected president of the Republic of the Congo in 1959 and led the country to independence the following year. Youlou's presidency was marked by political instability and economic problems, and he was overthrown in a military coup in 1963.
