Fulgencio Batista was born on January 16, 1901. He was a Cuban military officer and politician who ruled Cuba as a dictator from 1952 to 1959. Batista was born in Banes, Cuba, to a poor family. He joined the Cuban Army in 1921 and rose through the ranks. In 1933, Batista led a successful coup d'etat that overthrew the government of Gerardo Machado.
