Gavin served as the Government's Chief Whip from 2016 to 2017. He was appointed to the role by Theresa May in July 2016, after the resignation of Patrick McLoughlin. He was a close ally of May, and was seen as a key figure in her attempts to unite the Conservative Party after the Brexit vote.
