Answer
The Schäffer affair was an unsuccessful Russian attempt to conquer Hawaii in 1816. It was led by Georg Anton Schäffer, a Russian naval officer. Schäffer landed in Hawaii in 1816 and met with King Kamehameha I. Kamehameha agreed to cede the Hawaiian Islands to Russia, but the Russian government refused to ratify the agreement. The Schäffer affair was a failure, but it did lead to increased Russian interest in Hawaii.
