Georg Anton Schäffer died on 19 May 1836 in Vienna. He was a German botanist and physician who is best known for his work on lichens. Schäffer was born in Ansbach, Germany, on 25 August 1754. He studied medicine at the University of Göttingen and later worked as a physician in Vienna. In his spare time, Schäffer studied lichens and published several books on the subject.
